Frequently Asked Questions

Everything schools ask us about Readflexes, in one place.

What is Readflexes?

What is Readflexes, and who is it for?

Readflexes is a free arcade of reading, spelling, and math games for K-12 schools. Students practice vocabulary sets inside video games that record their progress. Teachers get a platform for monitoring learning data, planning targeted interventions, creating and assigning practice, and hosting whole-class multiplayer games. It runs in any browser with no downloads, and it works in English, Spanish, and Portuguese.

Is it really free?

Yes. There is no paid tier. Students never see ads or purchases.

How do students practice?

What do students actually do?

Students log in with a class code (no student email needed), pick a game, and play. Every game draws its questions from the vocabulary sets their teacher assigned, so a round of SmartySnake, Spellfire, or Text Drive is a practice session in disguise. Students earn XP, streaks, and badges in the Gym, and can study with flashcards, quizzes, and matching when they want focused practice.

Solo or multiplayer?

Both. Most games are solo practice. Face-Off and Spellfire support live whole-class play hosted by the teacher, and students join with a room code on the board.

What data do teachers get?

What does the student data dashboard show?

Every answer a student gives becomes learning data. The class view shows a mastery heatmap (who has mastered which sets and skills), the words your class misses most, skill-level problem areas, and suggested small groups of students who share the same gaps. Click any student for individual progress: accuracy by set, growth over time, time on task, response speed, and trouble words. Everything exports to CSV or Google Sheets, ready for grade books, IEPs, and data meetings.

How does Readflexes support MTSS?

We use a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS). Where does Readflexes fit?

Readflexes was designed by an MTSS coordinator to support all three tiers:

  • Tier 1 (core practice for all): engaging, standards-aligned vocabulary and phonics practice the whole class actually wants to do, with universal supports built into every game.
  • Tier 2 (targeted small groups): the dashboard automatically suggests small groups of students who have not reached proficiency on the same set or skill, so grouping decisions come from data instead of guesswork.
  • Tier 3 (intensive, individualized): individual progress monitoring tracks accuracy, growth, and time on task per student per skill, and one-click CSV export gives you documentation that is ready for IEP goals and intervention meetings.

Progress-monitoring data updates every time a student plays, so you can check the effect of an intervention without giving another assessment.

What accommodations are built in?

What supports do struggling learners get?

Accommodations are embedded in the games themselves:

  • Read-aloud everywhere: questions and answer choices can be spoken aloud, including hover-to-hear, and answer read-aloud is on by default in Face-Off. Students who use read-aloud are not penalized for the time it takes.
  • Answer reduction: students can eliminate answer choices, and some games automatically reduce choices when a student is struggling.
  • Extended time: teachers can grant individual students extra time in live games, and the student sees their own timer.
  • And more: free audio replay, picture supports for non-readers, hints, offline phoneme audio that works on locked-down Chromebooks, reduced motion, and light and dark themes.

See our Accessibility Statement for the full picture, including what we are still working on.

Language learning

My students speak Spanish or Portuguese at home. What do they see?

Readflexes speaks the student's home language. Menus, directions, and this site are available in English, Spanish, and Portuguese, and students can learn a target language with bilingual vocabulary sets. Practice sets never mix languages within a question, so learners are never guessing which language an answer belongs to.

Rules-based reading

What do you offer for structured literacy and phonics?

Readflexes includes a rules-based reading toolkit built by a certified phonics instructor: WRS-style sound boards with letter and phoneme tiles, alphabet and vowel-team charts, hear-and-build word games in English and Spanish, a Spanish syllable board, GraphemeDrop puzzle levels that follow a phonics scope, decodable readers, and a phonics progress board that tracks each student by sound and pattern.

Setup, privacy, and cost

How long does setup take?

About a minute. Create a class, put the join code on the board, and students are in. No student email addresses are required. You can also sync rosters from Google Classroom.

What about student privacy?

Student accounts require no personal email. Data is used only to show teachers learning progress. See our Privacy Policy and Data Security pages.

Where can I learn the teacher tools step by step?

The Teacher Guide walks through creating classes, building sets, assigning practice, and reading the data, with a getting-started checklist.
